Yesterday, I attended a "GenAI for Product Managers" workshop, led by Shira Weinberg Harel, and had an absolute blast (because really, what PM doesn't like to create a new product from scratch?🤓) Here are three practical tips I'm going to adopt moving forward: 1. Create an AI-expert team - Use LLMs to create a "team" of experts and hop between different conversations - give one chat the role of a designer, another of a developer, and a third of a marketing and sales expert. 2. Find your perfect AI match - Give your prompts to different LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini...) to see which one works best for the task at hand. 3. Embrace multiple perspectives - When chatting with an LLM, always ask for several ideas ("give me 7 ideas for how to solve this pain point and compare them using the following criteria..."). I left the workshop with a powerful message - while AI might not replace all of us, PEOPLE who use AI for sure will, making an AI-first mindset super critical.

The most common question I ask my product team members: "What trade-off is this forcing you to make on the roadmap?" When something new gets scheduled, there is always a trade-off. There's no such thing as "squeezing something in." And it is the product person's job to decide and communicate the trade-off we are making, and - just as importantly - ensure that all stakeholders are aware of it.

Transparency in our product roadmaps is essential. Here’s how we do it: Internal Alignment: We’ve got an internal board that everyone in the company can access to track our roadmap progress. It includes high-level product info and the team involved. You can see what stage a project is at and when we plan to release it. Customer Engagement: We use Sleekplan and Notion to keep track of customer feedback. On Sleekplan, customers can upvote or downvote tickets and create new ones. We also use Notion to track bigger requests, so we know who to reach out to for feedback and research. Collaborative Launches: Once we have a release date, we loop in our Customer Success and Marketing teams early. They get to test early versions and provide feedback, which helps them get familiar with the product and gives us an extra set of eyes for testing. We shipped 107 product features in the last 30 days. How? - Let Engineers be the source of innovation, not Sales (sorry Abbas Rizvi 😜 ) - Build prototypes quickly and validate with customers, don’t write long product requirement documents (PRDs) - Descope features into the smallest atomic unit instead of creating product complexity; continuously iterate to improve over time Why does this work? Engineers within our team have the best product ideas. Full stop. They are able to come up with moments of innovation constantly since they’re deep into building the product day to day. We listen to them when they give ideas and empower them to just ship if they think it’ll be useful. We don’t write long product requirement documents in Agentnoon. I can probably count on one hand how many PRDs we have written at Agentnoon over the last 3 years. Most days, its just ankur banerjee, myself, and a couple of our Engineers defining the problem to be solved quickly, then jumping into Figma to design the solution. We then make a Loom, ask our users what they think, and start shipping. We do this 15-20 times every week. Most new product features are 10x more complicated than they need to be. We ruthlessly work on descoping the features down into small, sequential parts, and what is truly required versus a nice to have. Our Engineers are also empowered to not build exactly to the design, but change things as needed to optimize for speed and usability. Most days, our product discussions begin with what we are not doing, and it's usually a very LONG list. That drives focus and focus drives speed.

🚀MVP vs MDP: Why missing the mark leads to product failure The recent cases of the Humane Pin and Rabbit AI assistant teach us a critical lesson in product development. Both aimed for an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), focusing on delivering something functional and getting to market quickly. But they missed what really matters to users: desirability. ❌ Humane Pin: Despite its technical ambition, users found the product clunky and disconnected from their real needs. It did the bare minimum (MVP), but it lacked the refinement that makes users want to engage with it. ❌ Rabbit AI: Another ambitious AI-driven assistant. Sure, it “worked,” but it fell flat in terms of user experience and adoption. Why? It wasn’t just about being viable—it needed to be desirable. 💡 If these products had focused on MDP (Minimum Desirable Product) instead of MVP, they might have met user expectations better. The MVP mindset is about “what can we do to get it out there?” MDP, on the other hand, asks, “What will make this a product users will love?” As product managers, it’s crucial to balance the MVP approach with what makes your product desirable to users—functionality isn’t enough to guarantee success. #ProductManagement #MVP #MDP #HumanePin #RabbitAI #ProductDevelopment #UserExperience

"Acceptance criteria can only get you so far, common sense the rest of the way." That was Karen Vandergaag, one of my favorite product managers I ever worked with. We spent over 3 years together designing and building the #Chomoka Platform for CARE International with the team at iPF Softwares, before she took up another challenge to become a product manager Wasoko and currently as a Digital Product Lead at Sonder Collective. Karen, wasn't your typical product manager. She had no background in computer science, she had a burning desire to learn and understand the entire software product development process. From tools to systems, at some point she learned how to code HTML and CSS. Karen's dedication was unparalleled. She never settled for "good enough." She tirelessly researched user needs and knew exactly what was needed to be prioritised next and what needs to be built now. One sprint review stands out. One of our engineers at iPF Softwares delivered a feature that perfectly matched the user story and acceptance criteria. Yet, something felt off to Karen. It lacked a crucial element – something that, in hindsight, seemed like common sense. During the retrospective, Karen delivered a line that's stayed with me ever since: "I know I should have added it in the acceptance criteria, but acceptance criteria can only get you so far. Common sense has to fill the rest of the way." Dear product managers, innovators, and non technical founders out there, here's the takeaway: 🌟 Never settle for less. Always strive for excellence. 🔍 Take the time to research and understand the product domain, if your investing in technology you have to learn and know at least the fundamentals 🛠️ Learn the necessary tools and processes : Learn the tools and processes used by your development team. This allows you to effectively translate your vision into clear technical requirements. 💬 Communicate your product vision clearly : While user stories paint the big picture, detailed acceptance criteria act as blueprints. They ensure everyone's on the same page, minimising surprises and maximising success. Karen, this one's for you. A Product Roadmap is all but a wordy description of a bunch of features. It is a picture, as realistic as possible, of the desirable state of the world, after the job’s been well done.
